India Sets New Record With 357.73 Million Tonnes of Food Grain Production
India has achieved its highest-ever food grain production of 357.73 million tonnes in the year 2024-25, marking a massive rise of over 106 million tonnes compared to the last decade. According to the latest government data, the country has recorded exceptional growth in rice, wheat, maize, pulses, and oilseeds, reflecting strong policy support and expanded MSP procurement.
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan released the final crop production estimates for 2024-25, highlighting that India is experiencing the fastest agricultural growth seen in ten years.
Food Grain Output Surges by 1062 Lakh Tonnes in a Decade
The Minister stated that total food grain production has increased from 2515.41 lakh tonnes in 2015-16 to 3577.32 lakh tonnes in 2024-25. Even when compared to 2023-24, which stood at 3322.98 lakh tonnes, the growth remains significant.
This sharp rise showcases the impact of improved farming practices, better irrigation, expanded procurement, and pro-farmer schemes.
Record Rice and Wheat Production Boost India’s Agricultural Strength
India’s two largest cereal crops—rice and wheat—have hit historic levels this year:
- Rice: 1,501.84 lakh tonnes (up 123.59 lakh tonnes from last year)
- Wheat: 1,179.45 lakh tonnes (up 46.53 lakh tonnes from last year)
These figures not only mark all-time highs but also underline the resilience of Indian agriculture despite climate challenges.
Pulses, Maize, Millets and Oilseeds See Strong Growth
The production of key crops has increased across categories:
- Moong: 42.44 lakh tonnes
- Soybean: 152.68 lakh tonnes
- Groundnut: 119.42 lakh tonnes
- Maize: 434.09 lakh tonnes
- Shri Anna (Millets): 185.92 lakh tonnes
Compared to the previous year, maize and millets have shown notable improvement, strengthening India’s shift towards nutrient-rich grains.
Oilseeds Production Reaches Historic 429.89 Lakh Tonnes
Oilseeds have registered a record output of 429.89 lakh tonnes, driven by:
- Groundnut: 119.42 lakh tonnes (record)
- Soybean: 152.68 lakh tonnes (record)
- Rapeseed & Mustard: 126.67 lakh tonnes
This rise of 33.20 lakh tonnes over 2023-24 is expected to substantially reduce import dependence in edible oils.
MSP Procurement for Tur, Urad, Gram & Moong Benefits Farmers
Chouhan emphasized that the government’s assured MSP procurement for major pulses—tur, urad, gram, and moong—is helping lakhs of farmers across India. He reaffirmed that agriculture will continue to remain the government’s top policy priority.
