Western disturbances bring rain, storm in hills and plains of North, Central India

An active Western Disturbance in the form of a cyclonic circulation has laid anchor over Central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab today (Wednesday) morning, triggering a trademark induced upper air cyclonic circulation over Punjab.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) observed another disturbance moving towards south-east Pakistan. It has brought a blanket of moisture, clouds, snow, rain and hailstorm over the hills and plains of northwest and central India as a broad and weather-forming trough, extending from the northeast Arabian Sea to northwest Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and southeast Rajasthan.

The combination of back-to-back disturbances in mid-February may cause isolated rain or snowfall over hills of Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh today (Wednesday) and adjoining Uttarakhand both today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday). The inclement weather may also extend to western Uttar Pradesh today.

Today (Wednesday) there is a possibility of scattered rain, storm, lightning and strong winds over hot surfaces in the plains of Haryana and Rajasthan, while the peace may be disturbed by storm and lightning in the hilly areas of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand as well as in the plains of West Uttar Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh. Hail may occur at isolated places in Punjab; Haryana; And eastern Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, as expected, an unseasonal low pressure area has formed over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and become more marked (intensified) over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean during the next 24 hours (till Thursday).

Digging tracks to the south

IMD’s numerical weather predictions suggest that it may dig west-southwest south of Sri Lanka, causing very heavy rainfall over the east coast of the island nation. Southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala may benefit as moisture-laden easterly winds move themselves towards the southern parts of the South Peninsula.

In its outlook for the next three days, the IMD has indicated that isolated rain may occur over Kerala and Mahe; Tamil Nadu; Puducherry and Karaikal. There is a possibility of scattered rain in Lakshadweep and Nicobar Islands.
