India allowed the export of 2.5 million tonnes of wheat, easing restrictions imposed more than three years ago to support farmers as domestic supplies improved from bumper harvests.
According to a statement from the food ministry, the government also approved additional shipments of 500,000 tonnes each of wheat products and sugar, in addition to the earlier approval.
The world’s second-largest producer has banned wheat exports into 2022 as local prices soar after a heat wave damaged yields across the country.
