According to the state’s latest sugarcane crushing report by the Maharashtra Sugar Commissioner, sugar mills across Maharashtra have crushed 90.66 million tonnes (MT) of sugarcane in the ongoing 2025-26 crushing season till February 8, 2026, which is significantly higher than the corresponding period last year.
During the period under review, 207 sugar mills comprising 102 cooperative and 105 private mills were operational across the state. The data shows that these mills produced 8.44 million tonnes of sugar with an average net sugar recovery of 9.31 per cent.
In comparison, during the same period of the last crushing season, sugar mills had crushed 69.7 million tonnes of cane and produced 639 million tonnes of 638.71 lakh quintals of sugar with a lower net recovery of 9.16 per cent. The number of mills in operation last season was 199, indicating a higher operational footprint this year.
Data show that there has been an increase of about 30 per cent in sugarcane crushing so far this season, with a slight improvement in sugar recovery levels.
regional performance
Among the divisions, Kolhapur division recorded the highest sugarcane crushing at 19.3 million tonnes, supported by a strong recovery rate of 10.87 per cent, the highest among all divisions. Mills in Pune division crushed 20.18 million tonnes of sugarcane, while Solapur division crushed 19.63 million tonnes of sugarcane, although the recovery level there was relatively low at 8.44 per cent.
Ahilyanagar division crushed 1.13 million tonnes of sugarcane, while mills in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division crushed 8.9 million tonnes of sugarcane during the period. Nanded division reported crushing of 100.52 liters of sugarcane with a recovery of 9.18 per cent.
Low crushing volumes were recorded in Amravati and Nagpur divisions, which together contributed less than 12 liters of cane to the state’s total crushing, reflecting the limited number of operational mills in these areas.
