Prices have increased slightly due to delay in arrival of pigeon pea, due to which imports have slowed down.

Trade sources said tur (tur) prices have increased marginally in the last few days due to reduction in imports, delay in arrival in the market and imports becoming costlier due to weak rupee.

According to the market update of apex trade body, India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), prices of new tur crop rose to ₹125-250 per quintal on Friday in various markets of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana. Prices of old tur crop also rose by ₹100-200 per quintal, while imported prices rose by ₹50-100 per quintal.

According to UPAG data, the all-India average wholesale prices of tur stood at ₹7,283 per quintal on January 21 this year, compared to ₹7,003 on December 31. Prices this year are slightly higher at ₹7,042 per quintal compared to the same period last year.

still below MSP

IPGA president Bimal Kothari said, “The prices have increased a bit, but there is no need to worry as they are below the minimum support price.”

According to IPGA, tur imports fell 8 per cent to 10,54,969 tonnes during January-November 2025 compared to 11,43,143 tonnes in the same period last year.

Nitin Kalantri, CEO, Kalantri Food Products, Latur, said prices have increased slightly in the last four-five days as imports have slowed down, rupee has weakened against the dollar and domestic arrivals are also slow. He said, “This year, due to increasing cold, the arrival of new crops is slow and farmers have kept some crops on hold.”

empty pipeline

Furthermore, the trade pipeline was empty as traders and millers unloaded their stocks in anticipation of a good harvest. He said, there has already been a huge arrival from Africa and now there will be a rise in imports from Myanmar from February-March.

According to the agriculture ministry’s first advance estimate, pigeon pea production for 2025-26 is estimated at 35.97 lakh tonnes, slightly lower than last year’s 36.24 lakh tonnes.
